Walk at Ruckle Park

A day hike in Ruckle Provincial Park is a necessary experience during a stay on Salt Spring Island.image Located in the Deep South of the island there are various hikes or walks to choose from for all levels of fitness and time allowed. We have visited with the very young and more mature family and friends and found beautiful spots to enjoy the scenery. As you enter the park you swiftly come upon bucolic open fields with a lovely Victorian farmhouse. This is a working family farm within the bounds of the park so please respect the signs regarding exploring this area. There is a parking area near the barns on the main road where you can get out and walk amongst the heritage turkeys and see the sheep thru the fencing. There is also the first of several outhouses here. We prefer to follow the main road straight to a parking area located near a meadow with Big Leaf Maples and more bathroom facilities. There is a map of the park here. There is a wide paved path suitable for strollers and those with mobility issues that leads to a lovely look out and picnic area. There are also various narrow dirt hiking routes leading off in many directions. The views are outstanding from many of these and you can choose to walk as far as you like, visiting beaches and lookouts along the way. We recommend packing some snacks and definitely water.  When you are finished at Ruckle there are some other experiences well worth your time while in the South End.
